Untrodden is fuel for wanderlust and an antidote to soulless travel...

Our story began in the magical backroads of Patagonia, when we were accepted into Startup Chile with little more than a wild idea and a couple decades of personal exploration to serve as inspiration. We were driven by our belief that the type of travel that had been most meaningful and transformational in our own lives was severely underrepresented and inaccessible.

This type of travel was fully immersive - it threw us into wild, untamed nature and introduced us to the vastly different perspectives and world-views of people that called those places home. In the rugged mountains of Patagonia, the glaciers and fjords of Svalbard, and the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas, we gained an ineffable understanding about ourselves and our place in this world, feeling absolutely tiny and infinitely large at the same time. We were humbled by the unforgiving power of the storms and found bliss listening to the sounds of the trees when there was no wind.

It was not only the wilderness that taught us these valuable lessons. From the gauchos of Patagonia, the arctic explorers of Svalbard, and the monks and villagers nestled in the remote Himalayas, we learned that there are ways of living and engaging with the world that are vastly different from our own. We were shown a brief glimpse of the rare wisdom engrained in these ancient cultures and traditions. We grew to understand our own perspectives and biases and returned home with wide eyes and a fresh outlook our the world, energized to preserve these places and peoples that had impacted us so. We coined this authentic and intrepid way of exploring the world \"Untrodden Travel.\"

The people we met on our journeys - locals, guides, travel experts - had fascinating stories to tell and wisdom to pass on. They knew their hidden corners of the world better than anyone else and were eager to share; to show curious travelers with open minds and open hearts the wonders of the land and give them a window into their lives. But they had no way to get in front of this kind of respectful traveler. In their eyes, listing with one of the travel industry's giants would land them in the vast ocean of cookie-cutter \"Experiences\" from around the world and open the flood gates to a revolving door of disrespectful and close-minded tourists.

These insiders we encountered wanted a more personal relationship and the respect they deserved as generous teachers and keys to a hidden world. They wanted to be sure that access to their communities was being controlled and activated by a company that cared deeply about limiting traffic and preserving the natural beauty and unique authenticity that defined their way of life.

That's why we started Untrodden - to connect these inspiring individuals with the right kind of traveler, eager for an adventure and to immerse themselves in a world quite unlike the one they left at home. Our mission was to give the locals access to the tourism dollars. To allow them to collect a meaningful income while preserving their traditions and ways of life. And we knew these experiences could cultivate a community of stewards of the environment and remaining indigenous cultures. We believe people defend only the things they love, and they love the things they’ve only learned through direct, heartfelt experience.

In our own travels, and in the years that it has taken to build Untrodden, we have assembled a community of these insiders around the world. Three years from our conception, now based out of San Francisco after a year in StartX (Stanford University's startup accelerator), we remain feverishly motivated by the same aspirations that drove us three years ago when the seeds of Untrodden began to germinate in the fertile void of Patagonia. PHOTOGRAPHY IS AN EXCHANGE BETWEEN A SUBJECT AND AN OBSERVER.

In my case, my subject is wildlife and in the following portraits there is a dialogue between myself and the animal I am photographing.

One day, as I am sitting on the beach, just a couple of feet away from a seal, I sense that my presence is no longer a threat and from there, a connection, a line of communication is established. It observes me. I observe it. It makes a move and waits. I make a move and wait. It is like a dance. I begin to sense its body language as its stares at me with its big black eyes. For a moment, I feel like we are having a conversation.

There is no longer the animal and me, but Us. We are all part of the same world, we share this beach, this ocean, the air.

Our existence is bound to each other, to this Planet. Our goal is the same, to survive, to live and to procreate.

During my tour of northern Argentina, I was invited to visit a rehabilitation center for wild animals in Candelaria. Among the residents were two jaguars. I sat down by the cage, only inches away from them. For the next hour, they showed me their teeth and tried to intimidate me. But after a while, after talking to them and showing no threat, the male laid down and relaxed.

The capybara is the largest rodent in the world. They’re the preferred prey of jaguars and anacondas and are found throughout most of South America, with the exception of Chile. When I was at Las Marias, I spent much time photographing and filming them. Sitting on the grass in a group of about twenty animals, they surrounded me, moving around, alternating between resting, eating, and swimming.

Admiralty Island in Alaska was called Kootznoowoo by the native Tlingit people, meaning “Fortress of the Bears.” Kayaking from Juneau, I paddled south to Pac Creek and camped on Windfall Island for a week. Every morning, I would kayak to the creek and wait for the bears. This was my first grizzly encounter.

During a visit to the Province of Misiones in Argentina, I was offered a private tour of the Guira Oga Refuge Center. The refuge is home to wild animals from the jungle who unfortunately got caught too close or mixed-in with the complicated lives of nearby city dwellers. Most of the time, the center is called after an animal has been shot but found still alive. Among the residents onsite are monkeys, ocelots, anteaters, birds of all sorts, foxes and others.

As with most of my photography, my philosophy is always the same — I didn’t want to take the shot, I wanted to receive it. I do my best not to provoke or push the animal into a defensive or an aggressive state. So after getting permission from the center I slowly entered the bird’s temporary habitat and sat on the ground.

I must have been in there for about an hour, as time just flew by. It was obvious that the bird didn’t want to be there and I think it is what I captured — the locked in wilderness. The ones who are not meant to be prisoners but free to roam the sky or the jungle. The depth of its stare, reaching into my soul — one word come to my mind — anger.

Realizing that I had been given an incredible photo, I thanked the bird and made my way out hoping that one day, sooner than later, his wish would come true and that he would find his way back into the sky, soaring into the sun.

I spent a month on Antelope Island photographing bison. Every night, I would hear the coyotes, but it was impossible to approach them during the day—they were always on the move and would disappear the minute they saw me. But on this day, the wind blew furiously and I was able to get close to this lone animal. Perhaps it was because of the strong wind, because while he clearly noticed my camera, he stayed his course and walked past me.

Bison have incredible eyesight and it’s quite hard to approach them without being seen. My strategy was pretty much the same every day: find a group of bulls, determine which way they were moving, locate some bushes far ahead in their path, then crawl on all fours and wait for them to pass.

Yacare Pora is a private caiman farm in the Province of Corrientes in Argentina. Black caimans were at the edge of extinction by the end of the 20th century in Argentina, but thanks to poaching controls and successful conservation management programs (like this farm), the reptile has recovered.

Paddling the Washington State coast, I spent a night on Destruction Island, located three miles west of Ruby Beach. Approaching the island, I noticed a large floating mass—what turned out to be a group of at least 100 sea otters hanging out on the surface. I was only able to capture a few shots before they noticed my camera and swam away.

I had the honor of tagging along with a BBC filming team as they were trying to capture the dusky dolphins feeding on a big ball of anchovies in the Golfo Nuevo in Argentina. The BBC team never got the shot they wanted, but I was pretty excited about this one.

Kayaking from Sitka to Hoonah, we paddled into the Cross Sound and through the Inian Islands in Alaska. We came across these sea lions just outside of Mosquito Cove. The tide was ripping and we knew we couldn’t stay there for long as the place is known for its incredible current. Still, I managed to stick around for a while and photograph these sea lions.

THE WILD IMAGE PROJECT

Ever since I was a young boy, I found my inspiration and comfort in nature. It thought me about life, and death, about change and evolution, about challenges and perseverance. It taught me about perspective and balance. Most importantly, it taught me about being humble and spiritual.

I started the Wild Image Project so that I could tell a story. A story about our relationship with nature, about our journey in this universe, a story about being human. Humans love to see the world within a limited frame, within a world that they can explain, control and manipulate. We forget that who we are today is the result of a process that has lasted several millions of years. We are also, just a chapter in the story of evolution. It is fair to say that if we had the ability to look into the future, most likely, we would discover that our appearance has evolved, changed, just like we have changed physically and mentally since the time we came down from the trees.

As our world is changing, so are we. Change is always hard. Change is by nature an unwelcome force. But change is also the reason why we know so much and why we are so good at surviving — it forces us to adapt and thrive.

Our unsustainable lifestyle has led us to re-question our values, the way we consume and the way we live. It is not just the last 50 years that have been damaging our planet, but the last 3,000, ever since we started to put Man as the perfect creation and saw nature as an imperfect reality: cruel, inhuman, obsolete… Since then, we have consumed our planet earth and manipulated her with no respect, believing that this land was only for our benefit. Just like a teen, who decides to egotistically deny his heritage and sees himself as the source of truth, we have strayed away from our roots bragging about our superiority.

In this period of change, it is important to remember that as we consume and destroy our planet, the people we hurt the most are ourselves. The planet will take a couple of thousands of years to recuperate, but we won’t. In fact, it has been proven, that the moment Man disappears, nature will flourish again. If we want the world to participate in this journey of growth, we have to change our way of thinking. We have to stop seeing ourselves as saviors of the planet. This change of lifestyle must be embraced, not because it will save the planet, but because it will assure our survival and provide a promising future for our children.

The story I want to tell is a story of hope and of unity. We are part of Nature, and it is part of Us. It is my own way of making the world a better place.

Concrete has been laid so thoroughly that many of us have forgotten what it is like to be in pristine wilderness. We no longer have access to that feeling of vulnerability, humility, and a deep sense of interconnection to something greater.

Earthtones Travel takes us to the remaining places that can remind us of that lost and profound feeling of wandering through a silent, virgin forrest or a remote and distant fjord. This type of travel immerses us in the lives of the communities that remain deeply rooted in ancient wisdom, community, nature-based livelihoods, and traditions dating back long before this ubiquitous, industrial cosmology ever existed.

These places and these people offer us opportunities to learn – to learn about ourselves, about other ways of viewing the existence, and about what it truly means to be a human in this mysterious and beautiful world. Be Respectful

When we travel, we have a choice to make in how we engage with the natural and cultural environment -- we have the choice of whether to be respectful or not.

At it's simplest and most fundamental level, we must leave the physical place better than we found it, being mindful of our waste and impact. This is especially true when we visit the pristine wilderness that defines many Earthtones experiences.

But on an equally important cultural level, we must understand that we are traveling to someone else's home and culture. It is not the host community's responsibility to adapt to our desires and expectations -- it is our responsibility to adapt and be respectful of their way of life.

Be Open

Be totally open to your experience. Drop all concepts, judgements and expectations. Allow yourself to be vulnerable and real. Open yourself to everyone and everything, understanding that every interaction is an opportunity to learn. Allow yourself to connect to others... to laugh, to cry, to sing, to dance, and to love. Accept the experience for what it is.

Open yourself up to new ideas and new perspectives. Open yourself up enough to allow your opinion to change.

Travel gives you the rare opportunity to be whoever you want to be, free from the expectations of the place you call home. Open yourself up enough to be whoever you want to be – to be that deepest and truest expression of yourself. Release your ideas and concepts about who you are in order to see who you could be.

Be Humble

Don't take yourself too seriously. Understand that your perspective – your culture, conditioning, and cosmology – is just one of many... one of an infinite number of possibilities. Accept and embrace the fact that the way you see the world has many glaring faults and blindspots, and that there is something profound and important to learn from the wisdom of the people and the places you encounter on an Earthtones journey.

Be aware of your shortcomings and imperfections, and be eager to learn

Be Mindful

Be fully present. Use all your senses to fully take in the experience. Listen deeply to the words, songs, and stories of the person on the other side of the table. Gaze deeply into their eyes as you connect, noticing the reflection of the campfire glistening back at you.

Listen deeply to the sounds of the trees when there is no wind, and to the smell of life as you saunter through a living, breathing forest... pulsating with presence.

Leave your life as you know it at home and embrace this rare opportunity to fully assume another existence. Take it in for what it really is, rather than what you think it to be. Through this presence comes true understanding.

Be mindful of how you carry yourself. And be mindful of the lives and experiences of the people you encounter. Be mindful of the dynamics of Westernization, colonization, and modernization and be acutely mindful of all your choices given these circumstances and his context. Be mindful of what you offer and how you treat others. Travel and engage consciously.

Invest Locally

When you travel, it is absolutely crucial that you invest in local livelihoods and embrace local ways of life. Buy from local shops and individuals. Eat local food. Stay with locals or in locally-run establishments. Ask the locals for the inside scoop. Engage meaningfully with the local community.

Only this way can we be sure that our travel benefits those who feel most deeply the impact of the travel. Earthtones only partners with those hosts that are locally-run or show a deep commitment to reinvestment in local ways of life. But it is your responsibility as a traveler to emphasize this attention to local livelihoods throughout every part of the experience.

Why did you decide to start leading experiential travel tours?

Born in Belgium, I moved to the U.S. to work in I.T. in my early thirties. Traveling the wide open spaces of the American West, Canada and Alaska, I fell in love with the sights and the wildlife. In 2018, I quit my I.T. job and switched full-time to become a wildlife photographer. Since then, I have been busy traveling full-time (I live with my wife and dog in a travel trailer) to build my portfolio of wildlife images and to establish my new business. An important part of this is to start offering wildlife photography tours & workshop, which has been postponed due to the current pandemic. What do you hope to gain from showing people your environment and culture?

My goal is to be different from the usual photography or wildlife tour. I'm aiming to offer wildlife tours in select locations at the peak wildlife action time of the year to very small groups. No sitting in a tour bus but getting your feet dirty and wet to maximize great wildlife viewing and photography opportunities! Plus, work with selected local vendors to benefit the local economy and make the tours sustainable for everyone involved, including the wildlife!

The amazing one on one experiences I have with wildlife. Like I mentioned above: no fighting for arm room in a crowded vehicle to be able to take a picture. Our day started out in Bodes parking lot, meeting our fellow hikers and grabbing a tasty breakfast burrito. Together, we were off to the Santa Fe National Forest to hike down and over to Tsiping, also called Tsi’pin, Tsi’pinouinge, or Tsi-p’in-owinge, the Mesa del Pueblo. Tsi-p’in-owinge is pronounced “Sipping” and translates to “Village at Flaking Stone Mountain”. That flaking stone mountain? Of course, the mighty Cerro Pedernal – which means “Flint Mountain”, and stands guard beside this ancient pueblo ruin.

Before you set off, there are some things you need to know. First, you need a permit to hike to Tsi-p’in-owinge. The permit is free and can be obtained from the Coyote Ranger Station – you can call them at (505) 638-5526 and they will email you the permit. They will also give you information on the ruin, highlights and, most importantly, directions to the trailhead. You will be glad you have this!

The second thing you need to know – is to avoid the short-cut from the village of Cañones which sits below Tsi-p’in. Don’t be tempted to cut through private property to access the site. The residents of Cañones value their privacy.

The last thing you need to know about, and be prepared for, is the drive to the trailhead. It’s about an hour and fifteen-minute often challenging drive – but worth it. The road is in really rough shape in several spots. I mean like defensive-driving-rough-shape as you navigate rocks and holes. You will definitely want a high clearance vehicle, and you may even want to release a bit of air from your tires before you head out. In bad weather, don’t even try this. Seriously, warn your passengers to focus so a sudden avoid-the-rock-turn doesn’t cause their heads to whip into the side of the car door!

Now the fun begins. (Wait, wasn’t that drive kind of fun?)

This is a fabulous hike – and one that is not easily discovered; we were the only people on the trails or at the pueblo ruin. The ruins sit at the top of the mesa, about 7,400 feet up. The trail is about 2 miles. The elevation drop is about 400 feet as you descend down. Just remember, this means you have to hike UP this on your way out!

After parking, head to the trailhead and start your descent. The descent down is made easier by the switchback trail that loops down the rocky hill to a ridge that connects the trail to the mesa top.

After descending, you will see a rock wall – and this means you are close! The rock walls that you see are likely the work of shepherds, after the pueblo was abandoned, designed to keep flocks of sheep trapped on the mesa top.

Look for the somewhat narrow opening in the rock walls and pass through the opening to continue up to the mesa top.

Walk to the top of the mesa and you have arrived. This is the pueblo area, on top of this amazing mesa, with spectacular views. This pueblo was the largest and northernmost of all the pueblos of the Classical Period, occupied from 1200 to 1325 AD. You can imagine what it must have been like for 1,000 Ancestral Puebloan people to call this home. As you walk through the pueblo, you will see pathways worn into the ground (volcanic tuff) that could have been the work of foot traffic, or possibly carved out by water flow. We’ll never know.

You will also notice mounds and mounds of rocks carved into brick shapes that were once used in the walls of kivas and structures. The amount of stone work is impressive. These carved rocks that are scattered in piles now were once the walls of 400 rooms, 16 kivas and a central plaza. As many as 1,000 people lived here and likely lived in the cavate dwellings, or cliff dwellings, formed by using niches or caves on the side of the mesa top.

The Great Kiva was built down into the bedrock, chipped into the rock, and was assembled with top layers made out of the hand carved rocks. Just imagining the time and effort involved in building a pueblo of this size and scale, by hand, is amazing. You can still see these rock blocks in action in many of the partial still-standing structures. The structures were carved down into the mesa rock (primarily tuff) itself, and stacked higher with the hand-carved rocks.

So who lived here, on this grand mesa? The pre-pueblo peoples and cultures that were the ancestors of the Tewa people, which today consist of the the San Juan Pueblo, Santa Clara Pueblo, San Ildefonso Pueblo, Tesuque Pueblo, Pojoaque Pueblo, and Nambe Pueblo. We have been told that modern day Tewa members still use the shrine located on the pueblo for religious ceremonies.

You will see many sherds of pottery - or pottery fragments - on the ground, remnants of ancient white pots with black designs used in daily life. These are great to look at, but do not remove them.

And, the views! Wow. Views of Abiquiu Lake, Cerro Pedernal, Ghost Ranch, the village of Cañones, and our Abiquiu Vacation Homes in the far, far distance! Behind and to the right of Cañones is Cañones Mesa, which merges with the El Alto Plateau to the right. The canyon at the bottom right is Polvadera Canyon.

Admiring the views was short-lived because we suddently noticed dark clouds rushing towards us – and, sure enough, the clouds opened up to a downpour. We knew this would make for a challenging hike back up to the parking lot and drive out, for sure. After eating a quick lunch in the rain, we started the hike back up the switchback trail, up the 400 feet to the parking lot. The drive out was even more fun than the drive in, given the rain and wet roads.

This is a hike we definitely recommend. From The Casita del Lago or Abiquiu Lake Mesa (www.DiscoverAbiquiu.com), take New Mexico 96 to US Hwy 84 towards Abiquiu. Turn right onto County Road 189 (Forest Road 31), just before you reach Bodes. Drive about 6.5 miles on Forest Road 31, through the Abiquiu Land Grant, until you reach Forest Road 27. Turn right onto 27 and drive about 8 miles to Forest Road 27D, which can easily be missed if you aren’t paying attention (dirt road to the right). 1.2 miles down 27D, you will hit the parking lot and see the trailhead on the west end. To get to this point, you actually drove around the south side of Cerro Pelon, down to the Polvadera Creek and back up onto Polvadera Mesa.

As you drive through the village of Abiquiu towards Ghost Ranch, you will see Highway 96, the road that runs past the Riana campground, the Abiquiu Lake dam and the Abiquiu Lake Recreation Area. Most visitors stop at this point and don’t venture further, not knowing what lies ahead. There are several pull-off spots along 96 that are the perfect locations to capture a stunning photograph of the lake and the red rocks.

Pull over and “take time to look”, as Georgia O’Keeffe once said.

The windy road continues with twists and turns, past the village of Canones, alongside of the great Cerro Pedernal – Old Flat Top mountain. We are proud to let you know that we’ve climbed to the top of this mountain, twice! Pedernal literally means ‘flint hill’ and its highest point stands at 9,862 feet. This mountain is the subject of many of O’Keeffe’s paintings, and her ashes were scattered on top after her death.

There are several more villages out along this road after you pass Canones, including Coyote and Youngsville. These villages have so much history – dinosaurs, Puebloan tribes, Spanish colonizers, battles and conflict, cattle wrestlers, land grants, and Georgia O'Keeffe. Today, much of the land in the area has been passed down from generation to generation, and you are more likely to hear Spanish spoken on the street than English.

While many people have heard of the village of Abiquiu, primarily because of Georgia O’Keeffe and Ghostranch, very few people know anything about the other villages you will encounter while traveling down 96. So, we thought we’d focus this blog on our neighboring village of Youngsville, just 8 miles down the road from #AbiquiuVacationHomes, and the location of our local post office. Unlike where you live, we don’t get mail delivered to us – instead we drive to our post office to pick up our mail, say hello to Veronica behind the desk, and likely chit-chat with neighbors who we tend to meet there in the mornings. And, our local UPS driver, Freddie, deserves a call-out for his friendship with everyone on his route, how he calls ahead if a signature is needed to make sure you are home, and is always willing to lend a helping hand.

In the early 1800s, Youngsville – which was then called El Rito Encinos, or Rito de los Encinos – was a small village of sheep and goat farmers who were given their land through a ‘land grant’, where the Spanish crown deeded land claimed by Spain to their loyal subjects. The largest and wealthiest farmer in the area was Juan Bautista Valdez, a loyal subject to the Spanish crown. Valdez lived in Abiquiu, and in 1807 he petitioned the Spanish crown for two thousand acres in what was at that time known as the Canon de los Pedernales. Valdez was allotted the land known as the Encinos tract; nine other petitioners were also awarded allotments of land in the area.

Permanent settlement in El Rito Encinos was frequently disrupted by raids led by the Navajo, Ute and Apache tribes, and these raids forced the settlers and ranchers to move back into the village of Abiquiu for safety. When the raids ceased and the area experienced moments of peace, settlers would move back out to El Rito Encinos to care for their sheep and goat herds. They stayed in the village during the cold winter months and brought their sheep and goats up into the mountains during the hotter summer days. Today, the ranchers still follow this schedule with their herds of cows, and if you are hiking up in the mountains in the summer you are likely to run into a cow or two or three.

Over the years, the land grants became a source of conflict with law suits and fraud. When the United States took over the territory of New Mexico, courts were held to confirm land grants. Many heirs to the orginal land grants had to petition to keep land that had been passed down to them. For the Valdez land grant, farmland was granted to heirs of Valdez, but the communal lands were turned over to the public to be managed by the US Forest Service. Many other land grants were rejected completely and the land reverted to the public domain of the United States.

In 1913, a man named Jack Young opened a general store in El Rito Encinos and also became the first pony-express postmaster general. Given these positions of importance, he

changed the village name to Youngsville, in honor of himself and his last name.

In the 1940s, the Forest Service became concerned about the damage to vegetation by sheep, and they encouraged ranchers to give up sheep farming and turn to cattle ranching as they thought cattle would cause less damage. Goat and sheep ranchers became cattle ranchers, and many generations of cattle ranchers still exist in Youngsville.

Today, a drive through Youngsville leaves one will a multitude of feelings: a drive back into the old west, a drive through a living history, and a drive through lands of immense beauty. If it wasn’t for the modern post office, one might think it was a ghost town. The old general store has long been deserted and left crumbling, as is Bernie's Bar across the street.

There are still a few generational families in Youngsville who are cattle ranchers, many are descendants of Valdez and the original land grant. Because the area is free-range – which means cattle and horses can roam freely – you will still see cows and horses along Highway 96 in the cooler months. So be sure to drive carefully! But, beyond ranching, there are few jobs in the area. Most find it hard to make a living, and young people are moving to the city after graduation.

The San Pedro Catholic Church, part of the Saint Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church parish in Abiquiu, holds mass on a scheduled basis. Saint Peter/San Pedro is the patron saint of Youngsville and his Feast Day is June 29. We especially love the parking sign out front: \"Reserved for Father\"...just in case the parking lot fills up.

The post office is vibrant and remains a critical service in the area. From Youngsville, Cerro Pedernal looks more like a peak than the flat top, as you are looking at it from a side view. It's beautiful, and first time visitors have a hard time believing this is the same 'old flat top'.

At the time of writing this blog, land and homes in Youngsville ranged from a low of $19,900 for a 5-acre lot to $12 million for an estate on 1,500 acres overlooking the Chama River.

The Youngsville cemetery is still in use and, last I heard, Youngsville residents can be buried there for $96/plot.

We find ourselves in a unique opportunity to rethink how we travel: to imagine and design a new model of tourism for a re-birthed, post-pandemic world... a model that is regenerative and local-led, rather than extractive and exploitative.

As we’ve gone through this journey of introspection, we’ve also taken the opportunity to rethink and re-imagine who we are, what we stand for, and what we are building.

Through this inquiry, we’ve decided to change the name of our organization from Untrodden to Earthtones.

Our reasoning for this evolution is multi-faceted... but at the core, the decision is rooted in the fact that the concept “untrodden” does not fully capture or communicate the ethos of our true and most essential service.

When we first started Untrodden four years ago, our belief was that by taking people to “untrodden” places, it would inspire in others an ethic of “leave no trace” and a desire to protect and preserve such places. While our trips had that effect on many -- and the underlying ethic still resonates strongly with us -- we believe the name fails to communicate the core of our mission...

To ignite a movement that reconnects us all to the natural world, and empowers local, nature-based and regenerative economies.

While many experiences we facilitate involve destinations with low human densities (such as Patagonia, the Arctic, Alaska, the Himalaya, etc.), viewing these places as “untrodden” tends to ignore, minimize, and overlook the human element and history of many native and indigenous communities who have lived within and among these ecosystem for generations.

To the people that have stewarded these places for millennia, these lands are not ‘untrodden’, and describing them as such overlooks the history of these people, and disregards their ecological knowledge and wisdom.

At Earthtones, our goal is to celebrate and share this wisdom, as we believe it to be critical in transforming consumer-driven, resource-extractive mindsets toward a more ecologically-harmonious future.

Our local partners are stewards, guardians, and wayfinders... and they are at the core of what we serve. Together with them, we design nature-inspired, immersive experiences that are locally-driven, with proceeds contributing to a local destination stewardship fund that invests in strengthening bio-diversity, local capacity building, and overall community resilience.

Far from merely facilitating travel to places that have yet to be visited, ‘discovered’, or ‘trodden’, our team seeks to spark a stewardship movement that at its core is about living in greater harmony with the Earth — in all of its profound tones, hues, shapes, and forms. It is our goal to bring our travelers deeply into an immersive, sensory experience with the Earth...

Inspired by place, all of our journeys celebrate the unique ecosystem and local community that it originates from — what we call its 'Earthtone’: its sights, sounds, and locally-adapted nuances.

When we connect deeply to the Earthtone of a place – when we can feel it, sense it viscerally, and know it – only then will we really understand the place on an emotional level, and thus be motivated to protect and defend it.

Because we believe people only change their behavior to protect the things that they love, and they love only that which they have experienced in a direct, heartfelt way.

Our mission is to facilitate experiences that help people fall deeply in love with the Earth, transforming them into emotionally-invested and inspired stewards.

After all, Earthtones aspires to be more than merely a travel community. We seek to develop a medium for transformative, experiential education that facilitates a deeper respect for the natural environment and better understanding of how to live in harmony among it.

At our core, we are building a network and a community that supports and empowers the earth's fragile ecosystems and ‘earthtones,’ for our collective and future well-being. Our one ask of thos who wish to join us — effectively our terms of service — is to share a love for the planet and a commitment to its ecological protection.
